The Creative Cities Network connects cities who want to share experiences, ideas and best practices for cultural, social and economic development.

The application follows a joint initiative by the Styrian government’s holder of the Economy and Innovation portfolio, Dr Christian Buchmann, and Graz mayor Mag. Siegfried Nagl, who are both solid supporters of the creative economy. The Styrian government’s Business Department laid the foundation stone by setting up and funding Creative Industries Styria GmbH.

The city’s application for City of Design followed a resolution by the city council. This represents a clear commitment by the city to the creative economy. Design now features very high on the policy agenda in Graz, which means that the city will take the design aspect into account in as many decisions as possible, in order to achieve the maximum benefit for people.

The application documents were produced by Creative Industries Styria (CIS) on behalf of the City of Graz and with the support of the Styrian government’s Department of the Economy, Innovation and Finance, headed by landesrat Dr Christian Buchmann. Creative Industries Styria GmbH is not only in charge of the application but also acting as an interface and networking partner between the economy and the creative scene. CIS will also co-ordinate all future City of Design activities.
